November

I've titled this month the home stretch. To be so close to my goal and still so far to go. I was still hoping in November that somehow I might be able to reach my goal of 180 pounds lost by Christmas, but I was also beginning to see that it was probably not going to happen. So I had to start getting my mind around that fact.

I tend to be a pretty positive person, probably a result of all the positive mental attitude stuff I've exposed myself to over the last forty years or so. And I had a lot to be positive about. My blood work in October was the best in thirty years or so. I'm feeling better than I've felt in years, and I'm able to do activities that I never thought I would be able to do again. I also understand the physics behind the slower loss. When you get close to your goal your basic metabolism rate (BMR) is a lot lower. In February at 330 pounds if I burned enough calories to equal the amount I ate, about 1500 a day, I was going to lose close to a pound a day because a 330 pound person burns up 333 X  12 or 3,960 calories if they just sit in a chair all day.  By the end of November at 170 pounds that number drops to 2,040 or just over half a pound a day. And just to prove that numbers don't always work I actually lost .22 pounds per day for the 30 day's in November.

For most of the month I did not do any strength training on the Bowflex machine, but on the 25th I did start that program back up on an every other day basis. And that helped me drop five pounds in the last six days. As you will see when I get the graphs posted this is the first month that I could see a real leveling out of the weight loss line. As I get closer to my goal it gets harder to stay at the new lows. I also realize that 170 is a place that my body has been stuck at for long periods of time before. It is about what I weighed when I was twenty, and then I dropped down to 150 or lower while I worked in construction for six years. Then when I was twenty seven and went to work for IBM I was back up to 170 in a matter of weeks. Then three years I managed to get back down to 170 for a short while but soon found myself up over 200 and until this year had never been able to break back under that plateau. So I guess I should accept that it is going to take a while and probably some long term effort to get below 170 and stay there. But I fully expect to do just that!!!.

As you can see from the table below, I walked only 22 miles less in November then in October but I did it in 18 hours less time. The jump from 3.17 MPH to 3.48 MPH is a big jump. I am finally starting to get in shape, that only took ten months to accomplish.

November 30th was the 299th day of my diet and through that day I had lost an average of  .5348 pounds/day. So I really had much to be pleased about.

Not a lot of inches lost in November, in fact I actually gained a couple  but I did reshape a lot as the pictures will show.
