January 2003

I guess I could be upset about January because I only lost one pound for the whole month.  But as I look back on the whole year I can't be upset about this at all. In fact I'm pretty proud of the year. I lost a total of 166 pounds in 365 days or .46 pounds/day. And if I add in the 75 days that I actually gained weight instead of losing it for a total of 77 pounds gained I actually lost a total of 246 pounds in 365 days, and that works out to a whopping .67 pounds/day. I went 362 days without any illness of any kind and then during this last week came down with a cold. But it has been the most benign cold I've ever had. I have not needed any medicine at all for it and it has not interfered with my sleep or any of my other activities. I have not felt bad at all, just a little nasal drainage and some scratchy feelings in my throat.

As I write this it is February 3rd and one year ago I was reading Dr. Atkins "New Diet Revolution Revised" and trying to make a decision about what to do about my health problems. When I learned that I really was diabetic it really hit me hard. Having known people who lost legs and lives to diabetes and watching my mother struggle with it, I knew that this was a path I did not want to go down. So when I read DANDR and learned that I could possibly stop the diabetes and control what I weighed at the same time it was something I knew that I had to try.

I remember thinking that I would commit to the two weeks for the induction  phase and if it didn't work for me I could always go back to eating like I had before. So on the morning of Monday February 4th, 2002 I started what  has now become my way of life forever. Dozens of people in the last year  have told me of friends they knew who lost lots of weight on the Atkins diet and then gained it all back when they quit the diet. When I hear that I just want to say "DUH!!" I don't know of any diet ever invented that would allow you to lose weight and then let you go back to the way you used to eat and not gain it all back.

For me the good news is, that in the entire year I've been on this WOE (way of eating), I have never been hungry. And I find that to be amazing and very attractive as a way to continue life. To be able to eat anytime I feel a need to and as much as I want to be sated is the best of all worlds. And I happen to love the foods I get to eat.

I wasn't sure when I started if I could get along without bread, pasta,  potatoes and all the other carbs that I loved to eat. But by the end of  the second day I felt so much better and had so much more energy that I was telling myself and anyone else who would listen that even if I never lost a pound I would probably stay on this diet. For me the positive effects kicked in that quickly.

When I started the diet I was unable to do any kind of exercise, and I spent almost all of my waking hours in front of my computer. I had been living with sleep apnea and a CPAP machine for fifteen years. Had high blood pressure, was taking eight different prescription drugs, and was ready to sell my motorcycle because I had not been able to ride it safely for at least a couple of years. Contrast that with the last 365 days.

As you can see from the charts below. I've walked 3,386 miles, done  13,108 sit-ups, and lost a total of 120 inches when I add up all the places  I measure. What doesn't show on the charts is that I got free of the CPAP machine on August 23, took two long motorcycle trips, one to Dallas, TX and a second on to Kansas City, MO, repainted my house inside and out myself, spent several nights camping in a tent and loving it and in general am the healthiest I've been in at least thirty-five years. The blood work chart in the October recap showed my blood chemistry to be the best I can ever remember it being. And I now only take two of the eight prescriptions I was on a year ago and I've reduced the amount of those that I take.

All in all I have to say this has been the most amazing year of my life!!

I need to explain as you see this chart. If you have been following these you will see that there is a big jump between the December and the January inches table. I discovered that I had a math error in the totals calculation. The measurements have been correct but the totals at the bottom have been wrong for eleven months. As time permits I will be correcting the previous tables. But I don't want to wait until that is done before posting this one. I know I measure lots of places and I'm glad that I have but the total is still pretty amazing when I consider I've now lost a total of TEN FEET.

Now for some fun pictures, I kept some of my old clothes just for this purpose.

oldshortsoldshorts2

This is a pair of shorts I was wearing one year ago.

pantspants2

Pants size 54 waist that I wore. And they didn't even come close to coming up on my belly. For what it's worth, today I bought a pair of slacks size 33" waist and they fit perfectly.

The red shirt was my first "I'm Not Fat I'm Pregnant" shirt. I got the first one in about 1980. Below is my last one.

notfatshirt1notfatshirt2

belt

I did not own a belt when I started the WOE, I had used suspenders for years because my build did not support a belt. So in March after losing forty pounds I bought this belt. It is a 44" belt and the last hole out was 46" and I could just barely stand to wear it the day I bought it. It now wraps around to the middle of my back and I refuse to cut it off. It is a great reminder for me of where I've come from and where I don't ever plan to go back to.
