Medication and Supplements

I want to talk a bit about medication and supplements. I was taking eight different prescriptions when I started my diet and about two weeks into the diet I took Dr. Atkins advice and began to research them on the Internet. All of these were prescriptions that I had taken for ten to fifteen years.

I did a number of searches and finally found which I found to be the best place to look up drug information. And there I discovered that one of the drugs I had taken since 1987 was causing "weakness, lethargy,  drowsiness, restlessness, muscle pains or cramps, muscular fatigue" and  numbness in my feet when I tried to exercise. I put this in quotes  because I copied it off the web site.

I have complained to every doctor I've seen since 1987 (about 5 or  6) including the one who prescribed it in the first place about these symptoms and not one of them ever suggested that maybe the pills might be causing my problem.

The bottom line with this particular prescription was that it prevented me from ever being able to exercise. When I first began to take them in 1987 I was running 4 miles a day. And within weeks I was not able to even walk as a form of exercise. When I started walking in February of this year I immediately started have the same problems and as soon as I found this information I stopped taking those pills. Within days the cramps and other symptoms stopped and have not returned since.

I also discovered that the medication I was taking for blood pressure was causing a dry nonproductive cough that I had for months and that gave me incentive to get myself off those pills as soon as possible. That I was able to do in April and the cough went away a few days later.

I guess what I'm trying to say is it really paid for me to do the research on the drugs I was taking and take action to reduce the side effects. I did consult with my doctor as I made these changes so it was not unsupervised but when I pointed out my reasons he agreed with my decisions.

As a result of Dr. Atkins advice in DANDR I also started taking supplements  very early in my diet journey. Below is a list of what I took at the start  and then this week I've added some others. The new ones are listed at the bottom of the list with the start dates. Since the multivitamins have lots of ingredients I have combined the lists for the two multivitamins into one list. I carry these lists in my billfold so I can share them with my doctor and dentist and others who have a need to know.

One of the reasons I decided to write this today is an experience I have had this week with supplements. I've been reading another book by Dr. Atkins, his "Age-Defying Diet". I've found a lot of information in this book that helps me understand better what is happening in my body. And as a result of what I've learned I've decided to add some new supplements to what I have already been taking. So in the list below you will find some I added on the fourth and some I added on the eighth.

What really caught my attention was the results of the ones I added on the fourth. The attached chart is one of the ones I keep showing my exercise progress. As you will see if you look at it I've included from the fifteenth of September through today. And for all of that time until the fourth my miles/hour was pretty constant. Then I added the supplements on the fourth and all at once my speed has increased from about 3.25 miles/hour to today's rate of 3.99 miles/hour. And I don't feel that I'm working any harder to achieve this at all.

I have no idea which of the four pills I added on the fourth enabled  this gain but I sure do like it. And I'm still reading and deciding what  if anything I need to add.

One last point and I'll stop boring people for tonight. Since I started this diet I have not had any illness of any kind. That's a period 279 days without even a runny nose. I can't remember when the last time was in my life that I could say that. I've never been a big believer in supplements and vitamins but I'm becoming one.
